Northgate Exchange review
A sober, EU-registered spot exchange with transparent fees and strong custody disclosures, held back by a short asset list and limited advanced order types.
What we liked
- Clear maker and taker fee schedule with no hidden spread on the order book
- Quarterly proof-of-reserves attestation with liabilities included
- Fast euro deposits and withdrawals by bank transfer
- Hardware security keys supported for login and withdrawals
What we did not
- Around 90 listed assets, fewer than most competitors
- No derivatives, margin or staking products
- Instant-buy feature is noticeably more expensive than the order book
Overview
Northgate Exchange is a spot-only venue aimed at customers who want to buy, hold and occasionally trade major assets from a euro bank account. It is registered as a crypto-asset service provider in the EU and makes little effort to compete on novelty. We tested it over three weeks with bank deposits, order book trades and four withdrawals.
Fees
Order book fees start at 0.10 percent for makers and 0.20 percent for takers and fall with volume. These are published on a single page and matched what we were charged. The instant-buy widget is a different matter: it quotes an all-in price that worked out between 1.2 and 1.6 percent worse than the order book in our tests. The cost is disclosed before confirmation, but new users are steered towards it. Euro bank withdrawals are free; crypto withdrawals carry a fixed fee per asset that is somewhat above the network cost.
Security
Northgate states that the large majority of customer assets are held in cold storage under multisignature control, and publishes a quarterly attestation from an accounting firm that covers liabilities as well as assets. Customers can verify their own balance was included. Login supports hardware security keys, and withdrawal address allowlisting with a 24-hour delay is available and worth enabling. We found no record of a security incident.
Experience
The interface is plain and quick. Verification took six minutes using the revised onboarding flow. The mobile app covers everything the website does. Order types are limited to market, limit and stop-limit, and charting is basic. Support answered our test queries within four hours by email; there is no phone line.
Verdict
A dependable choice for straightforward spot trading with good transparency. Active traders will find it limited, and everyone should use the order book and not the instant-buy button.
